February 24 in our country has great historical significance; that we proudly share with countries from other regions of the world, which had much to do with the events unleashed from that moment in 1895, and which are remembered with respect. In Cuba, with the Grito de Baire, on February 24, 1895, the so-called War of Independence began. Seen from a distance, in reality our struggles for the sovereignty of the country had begun much earlier, since the aboriginal Indians had to face the Spanish colonialists, back in the fifteenth century. February 24, 1895 had as its closest antecedent the uprising of 1868, when Carlos Manuel de Céspedes that glorious October 10, after giving freedom to his slaves, threw himself into the jungle to start the war that lasted for 10 years, and that, after its forced termination, gave way to the one called by Martí, our national hero, Fertile Truce.
